Review: Gomez Sim Industries’ Formula Pro Elite Wheel
Jason LiuShare
Today, we are diving deep into one of the hottest sim racing wheels – the Formula Pro Elite by Gomez Sim Industries.
Here's my full video review of the GSI FPE.
Unboxing the GSI Formula Pro Elite (FPE)
Straight off the bat, let’s address the packaging. The GSI FPE arrived in an anti-static bag, which might seem unusual, but I split shipping with a friend, and hence, the absence of the box. However, the packaging had ample protective padding with packing peanuts, ensuring that the wheel arrived without any shipping damage.
Aesthetic and Design
The GSI FPE, particularly in its Onyx variant, is a sight to behold. With a variety of colorways available, I chose a classic all-black finish accentuated with gradients of silver, black, and white. Contrary to its “Onyx” moniker, the design should not be mistaken for another colorway called “Blackout,” which predominantly features yellow.
Ergonomics and Size
The wheel boasts a formula-style design when considering its ergonomics and shape. However, in terms of size, it resembles a GT wheel. Measuring roughly 320 millimeters from one edge of the grip to the other, it equates to about 12 to 12.75 inches. Given its premium price tag (over $1500 US retail), the wheel positions itself as a one-size-fits-all solution. Its design and ergonomics make it suitable not just for formula-style racing but GT-style racing as well.
Functionality and Features
The central highlight of the wheel is its touchscreen display, controllable via SimHub. This allows users to craft custom displays, using designs created by the sim racing community. The GSI FPE offers an impressive button layout, including 10 single-action push buttons, five multi-functional rotary dials, and a seven-way “funky switch” in the center. If there’s a caveat, it’s the positioning of the funky switch – its central position might not be ideal for swift, mid-race adjustments.
Rear Design and Build
On flipping the wheel, you’ll find shifters with a remarkable feel. The use of magnetic shifters is balanced just right – neither too stiff nor too light. The clutch paddles, equipped with magnets, have a notable spring action, offering an intriguing race experience.
The wheel connects via a wired USB, which some might find surprising given the wheel’s high-end status. However, the benefits of a USB connection, such as bandwidth, compatibility, and reliability, can’t be overstated. The grips, made of rubber, are both comfortable and durable.
Customization
One of the standout features of the GSI FPE is its customization options. With the online browser-based customizer, users can alter the color of push buttons, rotary switches, and labels. Additionally, the choice of either touch-sensitive or display-only screen, as well as carbon or aluminum paddles, adds to the personalization.
Accessories
The wheel package includes a USB cable and a set of default configuration stickers based on the chosen colorway. A pleasant surprise was the inclusion of captive screws. Moreover, the threaded DIN connector ensures a secure connection to the wheel, eliminating unplugging mishaps during intense racing sessions.
Final Thoughts
The Formula Pro Elite wheel from Gomez Sim Industries is an exquisite blend of aesthetics, functionality, and build quality. It might be on the pricier side, but its customization options, robust design, and exceptional performance make it a worthy addition to any sim racer’s arsenal.
